The Quarry House Tour

A wooded hillside. A total transformation. One magical home.

Set into a secluded, forested hillside in Richmond, VA, this 1980s home is a stunning testament to what vision, craft, and collaboration can achieve. The client, who grew up in southwest Virginia, was drawn to the site's wooded setting — reminiscent of the mountain glens of her childhood. But before the magic could begin, the house needed serious intervention.

The Transformation Incorrectly installed exterior cladding had allowed decades of moisture to infiltrate the home, requiring nearly all framing and sheathing to be replaced. Missing foundations were addressed with an entirely new structural system to keep the house secure on the hill.

The Design Led by Jessie Gemmer of Acme Architecture, the original house was reimagined from dated and traditional — oversized foam mouldings, wrought iron balustrades, and a layout that didn't work for a family of four — into something truly special. The redesign honors the home's formal bones while opening it up with new windows, skylights, and a reconfigured floor plan. A central great room connects to a three-season porch and new kitchen, creating a warm space for entertaining, while peripheral rooms offer private family retreats. The result glows with light and joyful exuberance.
