If you've lived in Richmond for any appreciable amount of time, you almost certainly have driven past the round, distinctly modernist building at the corner of Thompson and Floyd that pre-dates the Jetson's era but still evokes flying saucers and space travel.

Seemingly out-of-place among the largely Colonial-style neighborhood, the former medical building was designed by Deigert & Zerkes & Associates in 1954 to serve the patients of Dr. William Higgins Jr. as the city expanded westward.

Round buildings have been in use throughout history but are difficult to build and maintain. Richmond has had its share of round building but few have survived the need to maximize the usage of rectangular city lots.

Thankfully, Ellwood Thompson's co-founder Rick Hood saw fit to preserve this fantastic building and has recently completed an extensive renovation overseen by Walter Parks Architects and included J.A. Heisler Construction, landscape architect Drew Harrigan of Four Winds Design, preservation consultant Mimi Sadler, and project manager M. Becky Boestfleisch.
